• 2019 - Position 166

Match Play. Red leads 3-2 to 7. Should Red double? If doubled, should White take?

For money this is a standard double and take where the take is very comfortable.

The match score changes things because a doubled gammon wins the match for Red with perfect efficiency. That turns the position into a clear pass and in fact it is a blunder to take.

Fascinating how that one point lead can make such a difference.

ND/T for me. I think the race is too close to double yet. That said, I don't know if White's rearmost checker is more of a liability or an asset. White does not want to get pointed on and fan right now, and she also may need a runner for more timing (a difficult role to fill from the 24-pt); but being back there provides significantly more contact. I think that the proper interpretation, whichever that may be, will have a crucial part to play in the correct cube decision.

Red's position looks very strong and white will not be able to hold the anchor for long, or will be forced to run the back checker. Either way a strong double for red, and I think white can eke out a take, but it's no bargain.

I am more sure of the take here than the double.. I believe Red does better to wait until he clears/safeties his two checkers on the 13 point.

      N/D: Take
