• 2018 - Position 80

Match Play. Double Match Point. How should Red play 43?

For money, 9/5*, 6/3 would be clear because that play wins more gammons than 9/2.

At DMP the two plays dead heat so you can take your choice.

Many years ago Paul Magriel told me he always wanted to be more than 15 pips up (after the roll) not to not hit in situations like this and I’ve used that suggestion more than once in my backgammon life. As you can see this position is right on the borderline.

I think it's correct to hit here. If Red doesn't hit he risks giving white additional shots later. It seems right to give him eleven shots now & if he flunks he risks getting closed out. And if Red fails to cover after a White fan Red can lift.

My guess is there is very little difference between hitting & covering (9/5*.6/3) and not hitting (9/2). If the race was a little closer, I'd hit, if more in red's favour I wouldn't hit.
