• 2018 - Position 6

Match Play. Red trails 0-3 to 7. Should Red redouble? If redoubled, should White take?

For money, it would be a triple blunder for Red to redouble. He has a huge amount of work yet to do and needs to hit the blot on White’s 5-pt before he can consider redoubling.

The match score changes things completely. A redouble eliminates White’s gammons from the equation, meanwhile a gammon for Red, which happens 12.5% of the time wins the match for him.

Now the redouble is mandatory (a triple blunder not to do so) and White must drop because of the gammon threat. Taking is a 1.5 blunder.

Stop me if you have heard this one before but the match score is the dominant factor here, completely skewing the money-game decision.

Red should double. It's probably reasonable for White to drop and defend her lead, but I'm not sure.
