• 2018 - Position 48

Money Play. How should Red play 54?

13/9, 13/8 is the wrong idea, allowing White to escape his rearmost checkers with a hit. 6/1, 6/2 gets you sent back to school, that is no way to play backgammon and is a triple blunder.

The choice would appear to be between 21/17, 21/16 and 21/16, 5/1 but that move puts a key checker out of play.

Red is not favourite whichever play he makes so he should try for the most positive outcome and that is done by mobilising his rear checkers with 21/16, 21/17. If not hit his checkers are nicely connected and if hit he should get at least a return shot.

Any play other than 21/16, 21/17 is at least a blunder.

There are two options I like. 21/17,21/16 or 21/16, 5/1. I slightly prefer the first option, as there is some duplication, and white has to split his army to hit.
