• 2018 - Position 47

Money Play. How should Red play 44?

Red could play safe here with 21/17(2), 7/3, 5/1 but then how does he proceed? There will be a lot of problems in bringing the remaining checkers home.

He does much better to play 21/13(2), despite leaving a direct shot. If the shot is missed he will have a lot easier job bringing home the checkers. 21/17(2), 7/3, 5/1 is an error.

Nack Ballard pointed out that if you advance Red's anchor to the 20-pt then the safe play and the running play are virtually equal. It is interesting that advancing the anchor one point can make such a difference.

I'd play 22/13(2). Even though this leaves a direct shot, the alternative 'safe' play leaves even more long term jeopardy. If white misses (25 rolls), red has a much smoother path to home.

I'm inclined to agree with Leo, but I am sure that is just due to the quiz factor. Over the board, I'm sure I would play 22/14 (2), 7/3, 5/1.
